-EDITORIAL. 

After the usual appeal for contributions ,ve have obtained plenty 
of material.to fill our fifth war-time edition of the School Magazine. 
Judging by the prophecies of the School strategists the next lIIalf<!.zinc 
should return: to the peace-time standard. -

Illness and bad weather both successfully prevented us from 
enjoying many of our usual activities. Sports Day had'to be postponed, 
House Matches anfl the T\vopenny Concert abandoned. Even 
so it was a successful year for games, and quite good for work, 
although in tliis wc advise more concentrated effQrt, fewer Red Book 
Entries, and less noi,e about it all ! 

We were sorry to lose OIwefficient Senior Mistress, Mrs. Luton, 
also Miss Fleming, Miss Stevens and Miss Fitzpatrick. We welcome 
Miss Evans, Miss Franey, Miss Harnett and Miss Mabley; Miss 
TunniC\iff has been appointed Senior Mistress. -Good luck to them 
all.

It is with great pleaSure that I .\Vrite ,this House report, and 
record that Barnes has retained its position as " Top House" ,after 
last y"",,'s great effort tliat brought us to the top after many years 
at the'other end of the list. 
We won the:'House Cup again, but lost both, the Sports Cup 
and the Wormald House Match Cup to Hardy, We were fortunate 
eno!,gh to have six School Team, members in our House hockey 
team, but although .'i{e were 'successful against Wren, we lost to 
Hardy, after an ""citing replay, 'Unfortwiately we diP. not have 
time to play all the House Tennis, matches; owing to bad weather, 
at the end of the Summer term, 
The number of membeis.in,the' HO,use is still increasing. Mrs. 
Luton left us Dj July; to her we send our good wishes, and ,ve 
welcome in' her place Miss Hamett, . 
I conclude with wishes for the continued success oUhe House.

Hardy; 

The members of Hardy as a whole have not worked their 
hardest for the House'd,uring the past year, and therefore it was not 
surprising to' discover at the end of the Suinmer term, that Hardy 
was in the position of second house. We could have done much 
bette" if everyone liad " pulled their weight" and had not managed 
to accumulate so many RB:E.' The'seniors, in this respect, were 
as much at fault as many of the Juniors. . 

The majority of Hardy members take it for granted, that there 
is a -lIouse, but they themselves do little to bring it to the,~oveted 
" top ': position. The predominant -idea is " leave it to the next 
person," and, if we are to become Top House, this attitude ,must 
change, " 

Although we'may not have shone in work, Hardy did extremely 
well in sports, and was awarded the lIIatch Cup on points gained 'at 
Hockey, as the'Tennis matches could'not be played off. ' 

We were again successful on Sports Day, ,and carried offAlte 
Sports Cup, chiefly oiving to the energy evinced by E. Maskell and " 

J. Parsons, who won nearly every race for which they entered. 
During the coming year, I hope' Hardy ,viII again reach" Top, 
House" position, and this is not impossible if every member tries 
to do his or her best,

_ Some of us attended very interesting lectures at the Town Hall, 

when Mr. David Wehl spoke on World Affairs. The Staff very 

kindly arranged amusements for us all at the week-ends. Mrs. 

Luton arranged a sewing circle,. whi,h produced good ",nd practical 

results. A Debating Society was formed, but time would.only allow 

for one meeting, the two moHons being " Woman's :Place in the 

Home" and "'Uniforni should be Abolished." Another pleasant 

ievenng of progressive ga!lles was arranged, the proceedings being 

frequently interrupted by searches for dice and Tiddly-Winks I The 

Staff 'challenged liS to a Table-tennis Match but much to the detri


merit of our dignity we were beaten, but it Was a very enjoyable 

game with good pl,!-Y. 

We musUake this opportunity to thank the Staff .for spel\ding 

so much,time iu keeping up the' morale of the Boarders.

During the last sca'on the team 'did extremely well, and only 
'suffered one defeat. In every match" team spirit" was in evidence 
arid this det~rmination to win often improved our chances of'vic'
tory. Several times the teams were very evenly p>atchcd. and the 
excitement was great when, on thrce occasions, we won by only 
one game. ' 

The two new members of the team-B. Wormald and N.'Head 
-co-operated so well that as a result they were made" first couple" 
in one match.

"THE FlRST·OF THE FEW I' 

The.film entitled" The First of the Few" told the story of h,ow 
MitchelI invented the 'Spitfire fighter which has proved so useful to 
England in this present war. The film.told how ilIitchelI built the 
'plane which won the Schneider .Trophy from Italy for,.England. 
When the war commenced illitchelI b~an to work on a plan' fo~ a 
pawedul fighter-plane. He wprked strenuously and even when his 
health was in aweak state he still carried on his good work. illitchelI 
was advir.ed by a doctor to take a ",st but when London was bOIJIbed 
he·refusd to take a holiday and resumed his work. At last the plan 


,of the 'Sf itfire was completed but MitchelI was in a very weak state 
and was confinen to a bath-chair. A few minutes after seeing the 
flight of the first Spitfire he ~ed. But Mitchell will always be remembered 
for his amazing courage and spirit.
